Protect Yourself When You're On the Field

Preventing an injury is much easier than dealing with the painful aftermath. Our Chula Vista, CA, chiropractor, Dr. Steven Wachs, shares a sports injuryfew ways you can avoid sports injuries.

Warm up

Warming up may seem like a waste of time when you're eager to get on the field or begin a run or other activity in a Chula Vista park. Unfortunately, if you don't warm up, your risk of injury rises. Stretching exercises improve flexibility and also increase blood flow to your muscles, which can reduce the risk of muscle strains and pulls. Warm up for at least 10 minutes before starting more vigorous activity.

Wear supportive shoes

It's easier to turn your ankle and fall if your shoes don't provide adequate support for your feet and ankles. When you only play a sport occasionally, it may be fine to replace your shoes once or twice a year. If you frequently, run, walk or compete in sports, you may need to buy new shoes at least every three months.

Improve muscle strength

Performing weight bearing exercises when you're off the field may reduce your risk of injuries during a game or athletic activity. Strong muscles improve joint stability and help you keep your balance.

Wear protective gear

Helmets, pads, goggles, mouthguards and other protective gear provide valuable protection for athletes. Don't enter the game or begin your activity unless you're wearing the appropriate gear.

Stop if you're in pain

Following the outdated "no pain, no gain" rule can lead to serious injury. Pain is a sign that something is wrong. If you continue to play despite the pain, your injury may worsen or you may begin to experience chronic pain.

Don't overdo it

If you want to get better at a sport, it only makes sense to work as hard as you can. Although dedication is important, you may injure yourself if you suddenly begin practicing longer or harder than usual. If you want to increase the length or intensity of your usual workout, gradual changes are best.

Chiropractic treatment can help you heal and return to the field if you experience sports injuries. Call our Chula Vista, CA, chiropractor, Dr. Wachs, at (619) 427-4747 to schedule an appointment.

Quote of the Month:

If you are distressed by anything external, the pain is not due to the thing itself, but to your estimate of it; and this you have the power to revoke at any moment.
